Over 20 years ago a bunch of blokes were brought together through their love of Australian Rules Football. Today, still good mates (and still playing footy) and juggling the pressures of marriage, fatherhood and typically busy lives they are now looking to give something back to their community.

The event we are running, ‘Kick to Kick 4 a Cause’, is an unofficial world record attempt for the longest ever game of kick to kick; and our goal is 24 continuous hours. The community will also be invited to participate; to have a kick and take a grab, and to also pitch in, fly the flag and to lighten the load. Anything that encourages men to come together, to talk and share what they are going through is a step in the right direction.

We have identified Menslink as the charity we want to support.

Many men hear a loud and clear voice in their head. It is the voice of despair, isolation and worthlessness. With nearly 3,000 people dying by suicide in Australia every year, and 75% of those being male, it is a voice all too common for many men who have reached a stage where their future seems non-existent, all hope is abandoned, and suicide is considered their only way out. This condition is far more prominent than most of the community think, and more than likely, you will know someone either personally or in your wider community who is living with this struggle. Many of us have already had to endure the heartbreak of suicide by a friend or loved one.

Australia is built around mate-ship, a “she’ll be right” attitude and a strong spirit of comradery; but in too many cases, she “won’t be right” without the generous support, time and financial assistance from those in the community who make an effort to help.

As middle age men all too aware of the importance of men’s health issues, we decided we were going to be part of that community who gives back; and what better way to do so than by going back to where our story as mates started; AFL football.

The event will kick off at the traditional time of 2.10pm on Sat 7th April 2018, at the Deakin sports fields in Makin Place, Deakin ACT. ACT Minister for Mental Health, Shane Rattenbury MLA will be opening and participating in the event.

We are now looking for support from the government, business sector and the community to help achieve our goal of raising $100,000 for Menslink to support important men’s health initiatives.

We are reaching out to our community in hope that they will get behind our fundraising efforts by way of sponsorship of the event. If you would like to contribute, please go to our website for full details.
