School Canteens


In Australia, schools and school canteens are more committed than ever to providing kids with appropriate food and drinks. The classroom and canteen are ideal places to help kids learn about healthy food and drink choices, along with the importance of regular physical activity.

In Australia, there are national and state and territory-based Government Policies on school canteens based upon the Australian Dietary Guidelines. These school canteen policies generally group food and drinks into three main categories – ‘green’ foods to eat most, ‘amber’ foods to eat moderately, and ‘red’ foods to limit or eat occasionally.

In addition to the government criteria, school buyer’s guides provide specific details on energy, fat, sugar and/or sodium for various food and beverages allowed to be ranged.


So how is Lion helping supply the ‘right’ food and beverages to school kids?

Lion has voluntarily registered a number of products with the main buyer's guides and products lists. We provide resources for schools outlining which foods and drinks are registered and are classified as green or amber. From plain and flavoured milks, to yogurts, dairy snacks, fruit juices and water, there's plenty of great tasting, nutritious items to choose from. We also look to these guidelines when formulating products for children and adolescents to ensure we optimise the nutrient profile.
